Subtraction Cutting

Subtraction pattern cutting, as created by Julian Roberts, is an innovative way of pattern cutting to achieve a garment which differs greatly from conventional garments. It creates shape and volume within the garment, and an interesting silhouette. This method also creates apprehension because it is not always clear how the garment will turn out until it is completed. If 2 people were to use the same method to make the same garment, it is guaranteed that both garments will be different; no 2 garments will ever look identical.
As part of this innovation project, I experimented with this pattern cutting method to create a half scale dress (as shown on the stand, left). Working within a partnership, we combined a plain and patterned fabric which enabled us to see the effect more clearly.
